چکیده

We present an analysis of IRAS maps of five molecular clouds: Orion, Ophiuchus, Perseus, Taurus, and Lupus. For the classification and description of these astrophysical maps, we use a newly developed technique which considers all maps of a given type to be elements of a pseudometric space. For each physical characteristic of interest, this formal system assigns a distance function (a pseudometric) to the space of all maps; this procedure allows us to measure quantitatively the difference between any two maps and to order the space of all maps. We thus obtain a quantitative classification scheme for molecular clouds. In this present study we use the IRAS continuum maps at 100μm and 60μm to produce column density (or optical depth) maps for the five molecular cloud regions given above. For this sample of clouds, we compute the “output” functions which measure the distribution of density, the distribution of topological components, the selfgravity, and the filamentary nature of the clouds. The results of this work provide a quantitative description of the structure in these molecular cloud regions. We then order the clouds according to the overall environmental “complexity” of these star forming regions. Finally, we compare our results with the observed populations of young stellar objects in these clouds and discuss the possible environmental effects on the star formation process. Our results are consistent with the recently stated conjecture that more massive stars tend to form in more “complex” environments. A COMPLETE Look at The Use of IRAS Emission Maps to Estimate Extinction and Dust Temperature

We have created new dust temperature and column density maps of Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens using 60 and 100 μm data from the IRIS recalibration of IRAS data. We describe an optimized method for finding the dust temperature, emissivity spectral index, and optical depth using optical and NIR extinction maps. The creation of these temperature and extinction maps (covering tens of square degree...

The association of IRAS sources and 12 CO emission in the outer Galaxy ?

We have revisited the question of the association of CO emission with IRAS sources in the outer Galaxy using data from the FCRAO Outer Galaxy Survey (OGS). The availability of a large-scale high-resolution CO survey allows us to approach the question of IRAS-CO associations from a new direction namely we examined all of the IRAS sources within the OGS region for associated molecular material. B...

Molecular Gas Associated with the Iras-vela Shell

We present a survey of molecular gas in the J = 1→ 0 transition of CO towards the IRAS Vela shell. The shell, previously identified from IRAS maps, is a ring-like structure seen in the region of the Gum Nebula. We confirm the presence of molecular gas associated with some of the infrared point sources seen along the Shell. We have studied the morphology and kinematics of the gas and conclude th...

Maps of Dust IR Emission for Use in Estimation of Reddening and CMBR Foregrounds

We present a full sky 100μm map that is a reprocessed composite of the COBE/DIRBE and IRAS/ISSA maps, with the zodiacal foreground and confirmed point sources removed. Before using the ISSA maps, we remove the remaining artifacts from the IRAS scan pattern. Using the DIRBE 100μm and 240μm data, we have constructed a map of the dust temperature, so that the 100μm map can be converted to a map pr...

Observations of the Carina Molecular Cloud Complex

We present large area, fully-sampled maps of the Carina molecular cloud complex in the CO (J = 4 → 3) and neutral carbon [C I] P1 → 3 P0 transitions. These data were obtained using the 1.7 meter diameter Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO). The maps cover an area of approximately 3 square degrees with a uniform 1 spatial sampling. Analysis of these data, in conjunc...
